Knowing a character, inside and out
I recently listened to someone's view on a family member's new experience and realized that we often project our own feelings onto the experiences of others. I'm sure I've been guilty of this with my own fictional characters. If I found a dollar crumpled up on the pavement, would I pick it up? Yes. Would I pick up a penny under similar circumstances? I probably would, but a character in my story might not. Human nature is predictable on many levels, but differences in our inherited tendencies and our life experience can cause us to make choices that someone else might not mimic. It's good to be sure that our fictional characters have a personality as unique and well-rounded as any actual person we know.
